Japan to Filter Handphone Content?

Japanese are the most advanced cellphone users in the world, as they could reach almost anything from their cellphone, or KEITAI in Japanese. Services cover high speed internet access, FM, Television, GPS, bar code reader, word translator (by scanning through the camera), and those ubiquitous services you can name it.

There are approximately 91,792,000 users by the end of March 2006, this include a big number of users under the age of 20.

Instead making life easier for busy Japanese, the "Keitai" (cellphone) has actually become a dangerous gadgets, especially after camera is integrated into cellphone (breaching privacy of others), and recently, as a window to the world of sex for teenagers in Japan.

Asahi reports
" Crimes involving online dating services, such as statutory rape, shot up 28 percent year on year in the first six months of 2006 to 909 cases, according to National Police Agency statistics.

Of the suspects arrested or questioned by police, some 95 percent accessed the sites using their cellphones. About 85 percent of the victims were younger than 18.

The three companies started offering free filtering services for subscribers under 20 last summer, but the choice over whether to install the filters rests with their parents at the time of purchase."

The filtering service will start next March 2007. (optional of course)


Almost all porn sites or meeting services are available through cellphone in Japan.
